Speech and Language Therapy

An initial assessment is carried out in order to establish the nature of a child’s difficulties and where necessary to make a differential diagnosis.

The assessment typically lasts between 90 minutes – 2 hours and involves taking a detailed case history of the child’s developmental milestones followed by an assessment of their speech, language and communication skills. This may involve the use of formal standardized assessments or formal observation through structured activities with toys. Concerns and questions that may arise will also be addressed and discussed during this initial consultation.

As a result of assessment, specific, measurable and achievable targets are set in conjunction with parents and carers.

For the most part it is not possible to be exact as to the number of therapy sessions which may be required following assessment, however it is hoped that a child will make the best possible progress within a realistic period of time.

Progress is reviewed regularly.
